Sunday El Clasico – Real Madrid starter absent from training 24 hours before El Clasico – but another makes surprise return

2 minutes read

Real Madrid are preparing for the last Clasico of the season this Sunday, knowing that a win against Barcelona would all-but end the title race in La Liga.

However, their preparations have been somewhat disrupted, with two key players experiencing minor setbacks.

Dani Carvajal missed training on Friday, although Marca reported that he is back with his teammates during Saturday’s session.

However, Ferland Mendy’s absence due to a muscle overload raises doubts about his availability for El Clasico, potentially giving Fran Garcia a chance to step in.

A surprise addition to Real Madrid’s training session was Thibaut Courtois appearance. The Belgian goalkeeper suffered a second knee injury of the season last month, and was not expected to play again until pre-season.

However, he took part in the session, which is a very nice boost for Carlo Ancelotti.

Courtois won’t be fit to face Barcelona, but he could be back for the final weeks of Real Madrid’s season.

Nonetheless, even upon his return, he may find it challenging to displace Andriy Lunin, who has been in outstanding form.

Ancelotti will not make any changes to his starting XI after the Champions League semi-finals despite the high level of wear and tear in a match of maximum tension, including extra time. The Italian coach, according to ‘EFE’ sources at the club, sees his first-choice players in perfect physical condition to start ‘El Clasico’ against Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu.
