The First Lady of Colombian television, Gloria Valencia de Castaño, died of respiratory failure on Thursday night in Bogotá; she was 83.
Born July 27, 1927 in Ibagué, the media legend was the epitome of poise and elegance and became a fashion icon alongside her daughter, Pilar. She was known by audiences all over the country for hosting shows like Naturalia, the first Colombian broadcast dedicated to nature, and the Spanish version of The Price is Right. She was also the face of the National Beauty Pageant.
Above all, Gloria Valencia threw heart and soul into journalism and leaves behind an important legacy in radio as well. With her husband Alvaro Valencia, she founded one of the most important cultural radio stations in the country, HJCK, in 1950.
In recent years she had retired from television but continued to write and appear on the radio. “It’s not time for nostalgia or regrets,” Valencia said back in 2004, “it’s time to fondly remember all that was accomplished”.
