President calls negotiators back from Havana

The President of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, ordered the team of Government negotiators in the peace process with Farc to return to the country immediately after the guerrilla group announced it will ‘pause’ to analyze the referendum bill handed to Congress for approval; the referendum would eventually endorse the talks and take place on the same day as the elections.

“I have made the decision to call negotiators back immediately so we can evaluate the reach of this announcement, the reach of Farc’s behavior towards initiatives that are only meant to accelerate a solution to this conflict,” Mr. Santos said from the Catam military base in Bogotá.

The President also said that talks can resume whenever the Government considers it appropriate, but made it clear that “in this process, the one who can call for a pause and set conditions is not Farc.” He also said he analyzed things very carefully before deciding to call negotiators back.
