Colombia no longer the underdog against Chile

With a 3-1 victory over Chile in the South American qualifying tournament, Colombia is one step closer to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. For the first time in 12 years, Colombia beat Chile in the qualifiers on its turf, in a stadium packed with 45,000 fans, most of them dressed in red.

Colombia’s head coach Jose Pekerman acknowledged, “There were difficult moments, as there will surely be moving forward in the qualifiers, but winning gives a boost of confidence and these victories are very important to our aspirations.”

He also said he was forced to take risks, “but we were determined against a rival that had only two clear opportunities despite its strength (…)”.  James Rodríguez, Falcao García and Teófilo Gutierrez scored Colombia’s three goals.
