President and Mindefensa insist violence has not increased everywhere
In an effort to change Colombians’ perception of an increase in violent attacks by illegal armed groups in recent years, President Juan Manuel Santos and Defense Minister, Juan Carlos Pinzón, insisted that, although there are still “critical areas’, security has actually improved significantly in most of the country.
The attacks, they said, are illegal armed groups’ response to the new military offensive, “they are desperate for us to change our strategies,” President Santos said, as he reported on the accomplishments of his administration and announced reinforcements of more than 20,000 police officers and 5,000 soldiers before the end of this year.
