Unions lead ‘Off the Podium’ campaign
British mining giant Rio Tinto is the official Olympic supplier of the metal used to make the 2012 Olympic medals but a campaign called ‘Off the Podium’, organized by IndustriALL and United Steelworkers, is trying to change that.
The campaign is aimed at shedding light on Rio Tinto’s poor treatment of workers and the company’s environmental irresponsibility. Tom Albanese, executive director of Rio Tinto, said his company follows rigurous standards of quality to care for the air, biodiversity and ecosystems and makes sure that any environmental damage can eventually be repaired.
