Septic arthritis, and not the injuries sustained from a beating, is what killed a 12 year old boy in Itagui according to a report by Legal Medicine following an autopsy.

It had initially been reported that the little boy died as a consequence of the beating he received from bullies at school for defending a little girl. The director of Legal Medicine, Dr. Carlos Eduardo Valdés Moreno, said it was hasty to determine that the child’s death had been caused by his injuries. It’s important to “not criminalize without having the bases to judge in this type of situation”, he said to the media.

The boy’s mother, however, disagrees with the report and said her son was healthy before he was attacked by bullies at school. He was “well until the day he got beat up at school and then he started having pain, fevers and vomiting (…)” “My son was fine and it had been many years since I had to take him to the hospital.”
