Pékerman welcomed as new Colombian coach

Argentine Jose Pekerman was formally introduced as the new head coach of the Colombian National Soccer Selection on Wednesday and received the team’s jersey from president of the Colombian Soccer Federation, Luis Bedoya.

Pekerman expressed his gratitude and shared fond memories of previous years spent in Colombia with Independiente Medellín (DIM), including the birth of his first daughter. “I was in Colombia during a marvelous time (…)” he said. Coach Pékerman will initially be working in Bogotá and his first priority is to prepare for the scrimmage game in the U.S. against Mexico on February 29th. The ultimate goal, however, is to make sure Colombia qualifies to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Fellow countrymen Nestor Lorenzo, Pablo Garabello and Eduardo Urtasún will be his assistants; all three were with Pékerman when he lead the Argentinean team in the World Cup of 2006. Bedoya said the federation’s mission is to support all decisions made by the new coach.
