Reparation process makes some feel victimized all over again

Sábado, febrero 9th, 2013

For victims of the armed conflict who have received, or are waiting to be awarded, financial compensation from the Government as part of the reparation process, the threats they get from suspects claiming to be members of the guerrilla make them feel like victims all over again.

The Reconciliation for Peace Movement has heard a number of complaints from victims in Abejorral, Dabeiba, Mutatá and Uramita, among other rural areas.

The alleged guerrillas approach farmers and inform them of their demands, which usually involve handing over 10% of the sum victims are about to receive. Perhaps an even bigger problem, however, is the fact that local authorities in a number of towns are unaware of the situation because of victims’ failure to come forward and file complaints.

Another issue authorities are dealing with is the fact that victims often fall for scammers, people claiming to have the ability to help them file reparation paperwork faster and get compensated in shorter periods of time.
