Constitutional Court makes move to protect indigenous
Jueves, agosto 2nd, 2012In an effort to protect Colombia’s indigenous communities, which have suffered greatly at the hands of the armed conflict, the Constitutional Court ordered the withdrawal of military bases from the reservations of the jiw and nukak peoples in Guaviare and Meta.
The decision comes at a time when indigenous leaders are demanding the autonomy of their lands and asking “all armed groups” to abandon their territory. Luis Andrade, the president of Colombia’s Indigenous Organization (Onic), said the decision “proves we are right in the sense that military presence on indigenous lands cannot be imposed any which way (…) it cannot lead to the violation of indigenous rights or put us at risk.”
