An injury plagued with controversy kept him off the podium at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, but weightlifter Oscar Figueroa made a fierce comeback in London, where he just earned Colombia a silver medalin the men’s 62 Kg category and set a new Olympic record with his clean and jerk.
Coaches and fellow athletes describe Figueroa, who was born in Antioquia but raised in Valle del Cauca, as focused and determined, worthy of the victory he is now savoring. Figueroa said it in Spain and then in London: “I am not promising anything, only to give the best of myself” and that’s just what he did in London. “I wanted gold, but that’s how competition is. I am very proud to bring this medal back to my country,” he said.
