Figueroa wins Olympic silver for Colombia in London

Lunes, julio 30th, 2012

An injury plagued with controversy kept him off the podium at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, but weightlifter Oscar Figueroa made a fierce comeback in London, where he just earned Colombia a silver medalin the men’s 62 Kg category and set a new Olympic record with his clean and jerk.

Coaches and fellow athletes describe Figueroa, who was born in Antioquia but raised in Valle del Cauca, as focused and determined, worthy of the victory he is now savoring. Figueroa said it in Spain and then in London: “I am not promising anything, only to give the best of myself” and that’s just what he did in London. “I wanted gold, but that’s how competition is. I am very proud to bring this medal back to my country,” he said.

Medellín’s water usage isn’t that high

Lunes, julio 30th, 2012

On average, Medellín residents use 131 liters of water per day, and not 439,91, as the Comptroller’s office had previously reported. EPM clarified the information and said the report claiming excessive water usage in Antioquia’s capital may have confused the data registered for facilities, where there is an average of four users, with that of individual users.

Contrary to what had been reported, water usage in Medellín is comparable to that of other capital cities like Bogotá.

President and Mindefensa insist violence has not increased everywhere

Lunes, julio 30th, 2012

In an effort to change Colombians’ perception of an increase in violent attacks by illegal armed groups in recent years, President Juan Manuel Santos and Defense Minister, Juan Carlos Pinzón, insisted that, although there are still “critical areas’,  security has actually improved significantly in most of the country.

The attacks, they said, are illegal armed groups’ response to the new military offensive, “they are desperate for us to change our strategies,” President Santos said, as he reported on the accomplishments of his administration and announced reinforcements of more than 20,000 police officers and 5,000 soldiers before the end of this year.
