The Minister of Defense, Juan Carlos Pinzón, undermined statements made by the head of the Farc guerrilla, alias ‘Timochenko’, saying that his group would withdraw from the Cauca region if the Military Forces did the same. Pinzón said those are just more of the same lies from the insurgent group and that, on the contrary, the Government and the Army will increase their presence in the department of Cauca.
“That’s typical of that terrorist group, if only they could tell the truth someday, Farc has done nothing but lie permanently to Colombia. There (in Cauca) they are pressured and that pressure (…) is going to continue increasing, that’s the message to that organization,” Pinzón said.
The functionary also said the heads of Farc are hiding in other countries and that all they want is to alter stability in some areas of Colombia from their hideouts.
In reference to protests in northern Cauca, Minister Pinzón urged indigenous and peasant communities to avoid feeling pressured by the armed groups operating in the area and instead to report infiltrations.
“It’s important that communities know how they operate, that they report those who are putting people through this so that they can be brought to justice, we cannot be naïve, we know it’s not the peasants or the indigenous, that they have the right to protest legitimately, but we know these terrorists are trying to take advantage of those situations,” he concluded.
