2011 was a deadly year for journalists

Miércoles, mayo 2nd, 2012

Ninety-seven reporters killed in the line of duty in 2011 made it the second deadliest year in the past 17 and prove that the profession is becoming increasingly difficult and risky.

The Reporters without Borders organization revealed that there were 1,044 reporters detained, 1,959 assaulted and 71 kidnapped last year. “This makes the job a dangerous one,” said Malén Aznárez, director of the group in Spain. At the top of the list of countries that pose a threat to reporters is Pakistan, followed by China where more than 100 journalists have been deprived of their freedom.

The countries affected by the Arab Spring are also high on the list, but Latin America remains a concern as well. According to the report, Venezuela, Cuba, Honduras and Mexico do not have freedom of press while Costa Rica and Uruguay are the only ones in the region with total freedom to report the news.
